‘WARS & SAWA’ and JUNIOR department stores are a part of the so-called Ściana Wschodnia (Eastern Wall), the architectural complex built between 1962 and 1970, designed by the architect Zbigniew Karpiński. They have been systematically modernised but the biggest changes have been introduced from the year 2000 till now. Further modernisation has already started and renovations to the adjacent Pasaż Wiecha (Wiech Passage) are completed.
Location The exact centre of Warsaw, on the eastern side of Marszałkowska - the city’s main shopping thoroughfare - near to the crossing with Aleje Jerozolimskie and opposite Plac Defilad. The buildings are positioned along Marszałkowska, between Widok and Sienkiewicza streets. At the back they border Pasaż Wiecha (formerly Pasaż Śródmiejski) - a precinct envisaged in the original design of the entire Ściana Wschodnia. They are perpendicular to Chmielna, historically Warsaw’s main shopping retail street, with the section running from Nowy Świat street to Wars&Sawa bustling with shops and restaurants.
